A pastor friend of mine recently shared an illustration with me on leading worship and flowing in worship. And the more that I think about it, the more I realize how true it really is. This is what he was telling me.
Worship leaders must always have that open ear to God’s Spirit when they are leading worship but they should always be looking for that place in worship that allows them and the people that they are leading in worship, to get into that stream of the Spirit. That place where we have the chance to get into that stream will not always be in the same location and it will not always be available through the same means it was the last time that we lead worship. As worship leaders we have to be in tune with the movement of the Holy Spirit so that we find that place. Because that place is where we will truly experience the move of God. But there is more. Once in that flow of the presence of God, worship leaders have one major problem, they tend to have the attitude that the music that they are playing created that flow and so they want to go with it as long as they can. And when this happens, a lot of times the end up stopping that flow. Our job as worship leaders is to find that flow, get into that flow with the people that we are leading, and prepare those people for preaching of the Word of God if that is the next part of that service or ministry time. Whatever it may be, we are there to help not to take over. It’s hard as a worship leader to do that sometimes because as worship leaders we are musically minded and can sing all day. But we have to realize that the people that we may be leading probably cannot.
I encourage each and everyone of you to take some time and seek God. Dive into his work and pray and seek his face. Once you have done that, communicate with your leadership on the place that worship has in your church so that is becomes a help to that body and not a hurt. Also, communicate it with the worship band and worship team at your church so that they may prepare themselves further.
God bless!
